The Convergence Initiative, in partnership with the BRaIN Repair and Integrative Neuroscience Program, the Centre for Research in Neuroscience, and the McGill Vision Research Group is pleased to introduce the speaker of the 2020 Black Box Neuroscience and Arts Talk, Darian Goldin Stahl. Darian is an American printmaker and Ph.D. Humanities Candidate at Concordia University. Her research-creation consists of multi-sensory artworks that collaboratively reconstruct the illness identity. This work has been exhibited around the world and was granted a Canada Vanier Graduate Scholarship for its interdisciplinary promotion of the health humanities.

Darian Goldin Stahl will speak about her long-standing artistic collaboration with her sister, Dr. Devan Stahl, who is a Bioethicist at Baylor University and has multiple sclerosis. Together, the Stahl sisters explore the intersections of medicine, patient experience, and multi-sensory printmaking to nuance and complicate clinical encounters. This research-creation project aims to advance the field of health humanities and foster a more empathetic relationship between medical practitioners and their patients. Currently motivated by Devan’s particular struggles with fertility as a woman with a chronic illness, Darian will then speak about her latest work as Artist in Residence at the McGill University Fertility Research Lab. Here, Darian seeks to reveal the networks of human, animal, and material actants that undergird scientific innovation. Viewers of this artwork are then able to train an eye onto layers of bodily research as a merging of macro and micro vantages.
