SINAPSIS, The Convergence Initiative and the Centre de Recherche en Éthique are pleased to invite you to the third science café of our cycle Art, Neuroscience and Wellbeing. In this occasion, we will explore the links between fiction, social cognition and empathy! Our Scientific Cafés aim to host open dialogues between artists, philosophers and neuroscientists. We hope to share with you cutting-edge scientific knowledge while reinforcing interdisciplinary exchanges and supporting the role that arts and humanities play in our society.
Can fiction help us better understand other people's inner worlds? Through a series of black marks on a paper sheet or a screen, literature manages to build entire universes. Reading a book can transport us to other times, show us unknown places and introduce ourselves to characters we will never come across in real life. Further than that, it can make us experience the feelings of characters that exist only within its pages. How is this possible? In this Science Café, our panellists will discuss this idea from three angles. Keith Oatley, writer and leading expert on the psychology of fiction, will guide us through the cognitive neuroscience of fiction and social cognition. Yael Halevi-Wise, researcher of the history and the nature of the novel as a genre and author of the book "Interactive fictions", will speak about the novel as a window to social dilemmas and Erin Soros, award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction and postdoctoral researcher will explore the depiction of madness in fictional work, including her own. Join us for a relaxed evening of interdisciplinary exchanges about brains, books and beyond!

SINAPSIS, L’ Initiative Convergence et le Centre de Recherche en Éthique sont heureux de vous inviter au troisième et dernier café scientifique de notre cycle Art, Neurosciences et Bien-être.À cette occasion, nous explorerons les liens entre fiction, cognition sociale et empathie! Nos Cafés Scientifiques visent à accueillir des dialogues ouverts entre artistes, philosophes et neuroscientifiques. Nous espérons partager avec vous des connaissances scientifiques de pointe tout en renforçant les échanges interdisciplinaires et en soutenant le rôle que jouent les arts et les sciences humaines dans notre société.
La fiction peut-elle nous aider à mieux comprendre les mondes intérieurs des autres? À travers une série de marques noires sur une feuille de papier ou un écran, la littérature parvient à construire des univers entiers. La lecture d'un livre peut nous transporter dans d'autres temps, nous montrer des endroits inconnus et nous présenter à des personnages que nous ne rencontrerons jamais dans la vraie vie. De plus, il peut nous faire ressentir les sentiments de ces personnages qui n'existent que dans ses pages. Comment est-ce possible? Dans ce Café Scientifique, nos panélistes discuteront de cette idée sous trois angles. Keith Oatley, écrivain et grand spécialiste de la psychologie de la fiction, nous guidera à travers la neuroscience cognitive de la fiction et la cognition sociale. Yael Halevi-Wise, chercheuse sur l'histoire et la nature du roman en tant que genre et auteur du livre "Fictions interactives", parlera du roman comme fenêtre sur les dilemmes sociaux et Erin Soros, auteur primé de fiction et Une chercheuse non romanesque et postdoctorale explorera la représentation de la folie dans une œuvre fictive, y compris la sienne. Rejoignez-nous pour une soirée détendue d'échanges interdisciplinaires sur les cerveaux, les livres et au-delà!
